I look forward to hearing how it goes. I've been doing the Starting Strength program and eating about 3200 cals/day to gain muscle. Basic movements are used: squat, bench, deadlift, press, and chins. Here are my improvements so far.

Squat... started 3x5 with 215, now up to 3x5 with 270
Bench... started 3x5 with 195, now up to 3x5 with 220
Deadlift... started 1x5 with 215, now up to 1x5 with 245
Press... started 3x5 with 115, now up to 3x5 with 140

It also includes power cleans, which I've liked a lot.

Re: Weight Loss Tips from My Experience

That's right!

Re: Weight Loss Tips from My Experience

Good tips!

Only you can determine what your ideal weight should be. And as far as BMI, put it out of your mind. It doesn't measure body composition at all, so if you're lifting and muscular, you could be "obese" according to BMI and not even close in reality.

Final thought - in the gym world, meathead is a compliment!

That's one of the reason's why I went with the Garmin dedicated GPS bike computer. Dedicated device that's built with the bike in mind and won't eat my phone battery.

I have to do more research on the Polar Blue HR but from what I've read it's the first device to utilize the new "bluetooth smart" (aka bluetooth 4.0) tech. Very very low battery usage. So in theory it uses a fraction of the iPhone's battery that other BT devices would.

I use my phone for tracking every rep and set I do at the gym so I didn't want to tack bluetooth onto that. My battery already doesn't make it through a day. It sounds like a great idea, but it doesn't get great reviews on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Polar-We...

EDIT: Apparently this isn't compatible with the iPhone. Weird. It's bluetooth.

Re: Reflections on one week back in the gym

Using a bike as a multi-purpose commute / exercise tool would be a wise move IMHO.

Did you get the new Polar Fitness Blue HR? From what I've read this one communicates directly with the iPhone 4S and other bluetooth 4.0 enabled devices w/o need for a third-party dongle. Thinking about picking one up for other non-cycling related cardio.

Re: Reflections on one week back in the gym

I wish I enjoyed cardio as much! I hope my knee and back can hold up ok to the torture. I am thinking about saving up some cash and picking up a road bike and riding to work. It is 14.5 miles one way, giving me a total of 29 miles on the road daily. I'm going to be evaluating my route and see if it is feasible.

Re: Reflections on one week back in the gym

Hey Danny,

As far as the steady-state cardio, I recommend reading Charles Poliquin.

Here: http://www.charlespoliquin.com...

And here: http://www.charlespoliquin.com...

I don't know if you're able to do sprints with your knees and back (I wouldn't think so), but maybe there's a way you could work the high intensity in some other way.

Just a couple of cents I had.

Re: Reflections on one week back in the gym

One comment regarding: "As far as cardio is concerned, I’d rather have a root canal. There is nothing more boring to me than a treadmill, elliptical machine or stationary bike."

For me it's the complete opposite. I agree having a root canal would be better than any sort of stationary cardio. But I've found similar joy in velocity based outdoor cardio as @mhenslee. The peace, serenity, solitude of cycling alone is a motivational factor for me. I enjoy getting outside and away from my desk. Enjoy trying to beat a previous course time. Enjoy listening to music or a podcast. It's something you'll never find indoors on stationary cardio equipment.

As far as equipment goes, I started with Garmin and love it so far. Most all their sports watches are compatible with heart rate and cadence (bike and shoe) monitors and are GPS based for outdoor activities. If you're really into cycling they are compatible with the new power meters too.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/sh...

Re: I have a problem.

This is a tough one.... If it weren't for the clothes issue (which I can totally relate to) I'd say be content in the moment with an eventual long-term goal. But like I said, the clothing issue is an interesting one. I started at 245 last March and I had an initial mental goal of 200 lbs. Once I hit that point I was ecstatic and had to buy some clothes as they were too falling off. However, fast forward to today, I'm at 188 and the clothes that I bought 12 pounds ago are now starting to look too big. A good, but not so good problem (with the cost of clothing these days). So like I mentioned to you on Twitter, even though I'm officially out of the overweight classification I'm at the very top of that "average" group. I'm going to shoot for the middle of the group and then regardless of what I mentally think of my weight condition I'm going to stop and exclusively work on toning.

As far as specifically being satisfied, I think you have to look at the big picture (and not loose sight of it in the future). For me I have to remember that I was overweight for 10 years. I tried and tried to loose weight, but my selfishness and lack of self-control prevented me from reaching my goals. Now I'm finally there and not going back. That's a HUGE life change and remembering the former me is enough to keep me satisfied at wherever I'm at now.

Re: The Purpose of the Bible

Great insight Danny.

The more I read the Bible, the more I reflect and study what it says. It has always astounded me what God chose to say in the Bible. Of all that has happened since the beginning of creation, these are the things he chose to reveal to us. Every word is sacred and every message, truth and story immeasurably important.

PS> you are a very good writer.

Re: I have a problem.

Thanks Will!
1st congratulations on loosing 95 Lbs! Seriously that is so awesome.

I've lost a total of 70 lbs and have kept 50 lbs off. I met my wife after I lost the 70 and gained over the last seven years thirty of it back and took back of ten. So I've kept off 50 over the last seven years but I often look in the mirror and see the guy who use to weigh 260 plus.

I'm currently 30 lbs off of my ideal weight.

Every time I've yo-yo'd on my weight and every time I look in the mirror I have to remind myself that "a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoking flax he will not quench." I get out of that passage two things. 1. I'm bruised not broken and my image is bruised and not broken. Jesus has judged paid for and is redeeming me in his image and not the image that I think is best. This earthen suit is not the final one. I need to take care of it but I know my heart's tendency towards idolatry and I need to remember it is merely a temporary tent. 2. I know I'm working at it and like the smoking flax Jesus won't put my efforts, in spite of my failures.

Second remind yourself who's you are. "You are not your own. You have been bought with a price." Look at yourself in the mirror and say, this is Jesus image that is staring back at me and not my own.

The heart is to fickle to be satisfied by earthly things. Paraphrasing Lewis, "We love to play in the mud puddles, when we were are being offered a holiday at sea." Our current bodies at best are mud puddles. Keeping in mind that the holiday at sea is coming helps us keep our body image in check.

I know, I constantly struggle with this. Our culture is obsessed with body image. It is the sacrament that our culture holds up as the holiest of holies. Yet, as we find our satisfaction in Christ we find joy that transcends the current struggles including our body image. Christ in us makes our earthly bodies the holiest of holies. He brings beauty and joy with him. So relax, you are not your own and he is working through you every time you look in the mirror.

Congratulations again on the weight loss! Find your satisfaction in Jesus along with the rest of us that share your struggle!

Re: I have a problem.

I sooooo relate to this!!! I was heavy (ish) in high school. I lost a healthy 15 lbs after high school, and then kept thinking "if I just lose 5 more lbs I'll be golden." I thought this up until senior year of college, when I weighed 90 lbs, was diagnosed as anorexic and almost hospitalized. So while you're healthy now, I do caution you as it can become a very slippery slope. I know what it's like to feel unsatisfied with yourself, and I think I am just now satisfied...almost 10 years after college and at the same weight I was freshman year (when I thought I was fat!). One suggestion I have is to maybe pick a training goal. I started running and then helped me to focus on training instead of weight loss. There's always triatholons, 5Ks, bike races, etc. Good luck and congratulations!

Re: An Open Letter to My Family, Friends and Church

Danny--beautifully written, and a wonderful tribute to your seminary journey!
